New Zealand is my favorite destination of all time (so far!). This stunning gem in the Oceania region is like nowhere else. From the unreal beaches of Abel Tasman to the epic hikes of Mt. Tongariro, you’ll never run out of adventures here. New Zealand has it all, whether you’re chasing adrenaline rushes, breathtaking scenery, or laid-back vibes.

New Zealand consists of two main islands: the North and South Islands. In the North, you can explore vibrant cities like Auckland and Wellington, relax in geothermal hot springs in Rotorua, and experience the magic of Hobbiton.

The South Island, on the other hand, is a paradise for nature lovers—think towering mountains, dramatic fjords, and adventure-packed spots like Queenstown. Whether you’re skydiving over Lake Taupo, road-tripping through Milford Sound, or sipping wine in Marlborough, New Zealand is guaranteed to steal your heart.

Why I Felt Safe Solo In New Zealand

The people were the main reason I felt safe as a solo traveller in New Zealand. Known for their warm hospitality and rich Maori culture, there’s a strong sense of community and welcome everywhere. The streets were clean, I never witnessed any crime during my 1.5 years living there, and I often walked home at 4 AM without ever feeling the need to look over my shoulder!

I also took plenty of solo road trips and camping adventures, and never once felt unsafe. New Zealand truly felt like one of the safest and most peaceful places to explore alone. If safety is your number one concern, New Zealand is your destination.

Auckland. Auckland is the perfect solo traveller vibe—safe, social, and full of cool things to do! Stroll through the lively Viaduct Harbour, chase epic sunset views from Mount Eden, or ferry to Waiheke Island for beachy, wine-filled fun.

The city is packed with hostels, boutique stays, and co-living spots, making it super easy to meet other travellers exploring the North Islands. It’s also a great base from which to explore other parts of New Zealand.

The locals are friendly, and the city has a laid-back vibe, making it easy to meet other travellers. Plus, with plenty of hostels, boutique stays, and cosy cafes, it’s a perfect base for exploring the South Island.

Choosing where to go can be tricky since there’s so much to see. Some top picks in northern Thailand include Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Pai, while the south is famous for Krabi, Phuket, and Koh Phi Phi. Plus, don’t miss the buzzing energy of Bangkok or the tropical paradise of Koh Samui—there’s an adventure waiting for you in every corner of Thailand!

Why I Felt Safe Solo In Thailand

I felt safe as a solo traveller in Thailand largely because of the warm and welcoming locals. Despite having less than many Western countries, Thai people are incredibly generous and kind. That said, these days, you might notice different pricing for tourists (we are known as farangs) compared to locals, especially in touristy areas.

Regardless, after traveling to many places in Thailand, I always found Thai people to be genuine and helpful. I love that the kids play outside and always say hello. Overall, I felt safe in Thailand about 90% of the time—one of the key reasons it made my list of top solo travel destinations!

Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is a dream location for solo travellers! This laid-back city in northern Thailand is super safe, affordable, and packed with culture. From exploring ancient temples to joining a cooking class, there’s always something to do.

The welcoming locals and huge backpacker community make it easy to meet people, whether at a night market or on a jungle trek. Plus, with its relaxed vibe and friendly expat scene, Chiang Mai is the perfect place to slow down and soak up the best of Thailand solo!

Koh Phi Phi. Staying in Koh Phi Phi as a solo traveller is an unforgettable experience! This is where I spent most of my eight-month stay in Thailand. Koh Phi Phi is always energetic, from stunning beaches to vibrant nightlife. Plus, meeting fellow travelers at hostels, beach bars, and boat tours is super easy, making solo travel feel social and fun.

Something exciting always happens, whether hiking to the viewpoint, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, or dancing at a fire show. The island is small and walkable, so getting around is a breeze. If you’re looking for a solo trip destination in Europe, Montenegro is the answer! It’s hands down my favorite European solo destination – it absolutely wowed me and felt incredibly safe. This stunning country is full of breathtaking photo opportunities and good vibes – plus it’s very budget-friendly!

Expect to be surrounded by dramatic limestone mountains, crystal-clear blue waters, and jaw-dropping views. You can choose to stay in the lively Kotor or Budva, where the action is, or go for a slower-paced city like Herceg Novi, which is just as beautiful. Wherever you go in Montenegro, you will surely have an amazing time!

Why I Felt Safe Solo In Montenegro

I felt safe as a solo traveller in Montenegro because it was easy to navigate, and to be honest, I barely thought about safety there! I even hitched a ride for the first time in my life there with a girl I had met only 10 minutes before! Also, I joined several tours solo; the guides were friendly, and nothing disappointed. Honestly, this country is UNREAL.

Plus, Kotor wasn’t a big party scene—most venues closed by midnight, which made the evenings feel calm and safe. I had no worries walking around alone at night. So, if you’re after breathtaking views and a secure destination, Montenegro should definitely be on your radar!

I felt safe as a solo traveller to Bali because that is the vibe this Indonesian beauty brings! Similar to Thailand, the locals and staff make you feel safe. I’ve been to Bali solo a few times, staying in multiple locations and beautiful villas, and it always felt good to be walking alone.

Expect plenty of friendly smiles, curious stares, and warm welcomes from the locals! Bali is a top choice for solo retreats for a reason—it’s affordable, stunning, and has a safe, welcoming vibe, especially for female solo travellers.

Ubud. If you’re a solo traveller looking for a mix of relaxation, culture, and self-discovery, Ubud is the place to be. Known for its jungle vibes, epic rice fields, and healing retreats, this location is perfect for unwinding and recharging.

I felt incredibly safe during my solo trip to Monaco! The whole place is drizzled in glitz and glam, making it feel like a luxurious paradise, where safety just comes naturally. The locals seemed genuinely happy (I mean, with that much wealth around, who wouldn’t be?), and the overall atmosphere was nothing but good vibes.

I felt safe in Scotland because it had a familiar, homey feel, just with a Scottish twist! It’s similar to England but with its own unique charm, which made me feel comfortable and at ease while exploring. Aside from the Scottish accent (which, honestly, took me a few weeks to get used to), the locals were incredibly friendly and welcoming.

I had so many great nights out and never once felt unsafe. The overall vibe was warm, lively, and inviting, making Scotland a fantastic destination for solo travelers looking for adventure, culture, and a friendly atmosphere.

Whether wandering through the Old Town, hiking up Arthur’s Seat, or joining an epic tour in Edinburgh, you’ll never feel out of place traveling solo.

Why I Felt Safe In Rome & Vatican City

Despite reports of pickpocketing (which, let’s be real, happens everywhere—even in your own country), I felt reasonably safe in Rome and Vatican City. Exploring was super easy; the streets were busy and lively, and I could fully relax and enjoy the experience without worrying.

That being said, nighttime felt a little different. Men approached me a few times, but while it was a bit annoying, I never felt truly unsafe. Just stay aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts, and you’ll be able to enjoy everything this incredible city has to offer!

Prati (Near Vatican City). Prati is a safe, elegant, quiet neighborhood just a short walk from Vatican City. It’s well-lit at night, filled with charming cafes, and has less of a touristy feel compared to central Rome.

With its wide streets, upscale shopping, and local restaurants, Prati is a great spot for solo travellers who want to stay near St. Peter’s Basilica while enjoying a relaxed, authentic Roman vibe.

Why I Felt Safe In Latvia

At first, I was a bit skeptical about visiting Latvia since it’s not a typical tourist hotspot, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I was pleasantly surprised by how safe I felt exploring solo as a woman. While the locals weren’t as friendly as in places like Bali, they were polite and respectful.

I did get quite a few stares, but that was expected—I usually have colourful braids when I travel, which naturally draws attention. Despite that, I never felt uncomfortable or unsafe roaming around alone, and I found Latvia to be a great safe solo travel destination with its mix of history, charm, and affordability!

Riga Old Town. Riga’s Old Town is perfect if you love history, charm, and convenience. This area has cobbled streets and cool medieval architecture. It’s well-lit, has a good police presence, and is always lively, making it an excellent option for solo travelers who want to explore on foot.

Riga’s Old Town is the most popular area to stay in and is a good base for exploring other places in Latvia. Plus, most hostels, hotels, and restaurants cater to tourists, so you’ll likely meet fellow travelers along the way if you go during peak season!

Why I Felt Safe In Vanuatu

I felt safe as a solo traveller in Vanuatu because it exceeded my expectations! As this was one of my early solo trip adventures, I was unsure what to expect and a little nervous. However, I felt right at ease and fell in love with the beaches. Plus, the locals are incredibly welcoming, making it a safe and stress-free choice for solo travellers exploring somewhere unique!

I also love how honest and genuine the locals are! I accidentally overpaid the taxi man by £250 as I was confused about the conversion rates (rookie error). He could have kept it and been sorted for the next few months, but he told me it was too much (I tipped him £50 after that). Everything about the locals made me feel welcome, so I recommend Vanuatu for a solo getaway!

I felt completely safe as a solo traveller in Norway—it’s clean, friendly, and just too stunning to feel anything but at ease! The vibe was calm and peaceful, and I never once felt the need to be on high alert. The locals were polite and helpful without being overbearing, and the overall atmosphere just felt secure and welcoming.

I didn’t go out much at night, so I can’t speak for the nightlife scene, but everything felt safe and hassle-free during the daytime. Why I Feel Safe In The UK

In addition to my original home town, London, I’ve been fortunate enough to explore, do staycations, and live in many parts of the UK. There’s always an adventure from Bournemouth, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle and many other cool spots.

I’ll be honest and say, although I feel safe, I’m more alert during the night, of course. It’s not because I’ve experienced anything crazy, but because of all the chilling Netflix series, I’m more aware, haha. The UK is not crime-free, and petty crimes happen all the time; however, as a solo traveller, I would recommend exploring the UK, it’s pretty chilled!
