All You Need To Know About Vietnam

Language: The official language is Vietnamese. English is spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants, especially in big cities, but learning a few basic Vietnamese phrases will definitely earn you some smiles. Google Translate is also available to save the day, too.

Currency: Vietnam uses the Vietnamese Dong (VND). 100,000 VND is approximately $4 USD! Cash is king here, especially for street food, markets, and small shops, so always keep some on hand. ATMs are easy to find in cities.

Best Time To Visit: Vietnam can be visited year-round, but the best overall time is March to April, when temperatures are comfortable, and rainfall is lower. Weather varies by region, so timing depends on where you’re heading. It’s best to visit Northern Vietnam from October to November and from March to April. Central Vietnam: February to August; Southern Vietnam: December to April.

Getting Around: Vietnam is easy to travel in. Domestic flights are affordable for long-distance travel, while GRAB taxis, sleeper buses, and scenic trains are well-suited for city travel. Renting a scooter is popular, but it’s best for confident riders only, as the streets and traffic are nothing like you’ve seen before.

Cultural Norms: Vietnamese culture values respect and politeness. Dress modestly when visiting temples, remove shoes indoors, and avoid public displays of anger. Smiling and patience go a long way. Tips are always appreciated! A few dollars (50,000 VND) goes a long way.

Safety: Vietnam is a safe and welcoming destination for travellers, especially solo travellers, with friendly locals and relatively low crime. As with anywhere, stay alert in busy areas, watch for petty theft, and double-check your change. Always check GOV.UK (UK residents) for the latest travel advice before you go.

2. Ninh Binh

If I had to pick just two locations for my Vietnam bucket-list itinerary, one would be Ninh Binh, as it’s raw, rugged, and totally my vibe! With its dramatic limestone cliffs and caves, winding rivers, and ancient temples surrounded by stunning rice paddies, this nature lover’s paradise is a must-add to your itinerary.

Ninh Binh is really full of excitement and views. Whether cycling to a temple, climbing 500 steps for panoramic views, or relaxing on scenic boat rides through stunning caves, Ninh Binh offers unforgettable experiences in one place. If there’s one place in Vietnam that truly screams bucket list, it’s Ha Long Bay. Think calm emerald waters, thousands of dramatic limestone islands, and unreal views in every direction. The overnight Amanda Cruise on the 3d 2n Amanda Cruise Tour was just amazing. Waking up to the views of Ha Long Bay is an experience I won’t forget anytime soon! The rooms were gorgeous, and the staff were friendly, making this stay a solid 10/10.

5. Da Nang

Da Nang is the ultimate all-in-one destination! Think stunning beaches, epic nightlife, and jaw-dropping nature all in one spot. Spend your morning surfing or chilling on My Khe Beach, your afternoon on a day trip, and your night hitting rooftop bars with insane city views.

Da Nang has some of my favourite attractions: Ba Na Hills, the famous Golden Hand Bridge (yes, the one held up by giant hands), and the Marble Mountains. Plus, Hoi An is just a short ride away! Whether you’re here to relax, explore, or party, Da Nang has it all. Make sure to add it to your Vietnam bucket list – no ifs, no buts, no maybes!

  • Golden Hand Bridge & Ba Na Hills: A must-visit when visiting! This popular attraction near Da Nang offers plenty to see. I spent 4 hours alone here, but I could have easily done 6; there’s so much to see! Plus, the weather changes frequently, but the wait for clear skies is worth it! This attraction was a highlight of my Vietnam bucket-list trip! Defo recommend going solo or with the Golden Bridge & Ba Na Hills Tour!
  • Marble Mountain, Monkeys & Caves: Explore the Marble Mountains and Am Phu Cave, where you’ll witness the mystical underworld and discover Buddhist depictions of hell; it’s really fascinating (and a little creepy). Then, head to Monkey Mountain and soak in stunning sunset views of Da Nang from the top of Son Tra Peninsula. With cultural sights and jaw-dropping panoramas, this Marble Mountain, Monkeys & Cave Tour perfectly combines history, nature, and epic views!
