Heartbeat Of The Caribbean

Get ready to groove in Jamaica, where paradise meets party vibes! This island gem in the Caribbean is a sizzling mix of golden beaches, lush mountains, and cascading waterfalls. Feel the rhythm of life as you explore the vibrant streets of Montego Bay.

Or are you thinking about the stunning shores of Negril? Where the local culture, mouth-watering jerk cuisine, and legendary reggae beats run the town. From adventurous hikes to lazy beach days, Jamaica is all about fun, flavour, and fantastic experiences. So pack your bags and let Jamaica’s infectious spirit sweep you off your feet!

My mum and I went to Jamaica during a multi-trip vacation, travelling from Jamaica to Panama and Cuba and then back to Jamaica. Unfortunately, Hurricane Beryl caused us to miss five days of the original booking (so we went to Turkey in the meantime).

Jamaica has been a lifelong dream on my travel bucket list, so of course, this was a super exciting destination I was looking forward to. In this blog, I’ll list things I wish I had known before I went and all the important bits you need to know. As our trip was shortened by five days, we didn’t get to do the excursions we set out to do; however, I’ll still recommend all the cool things I would have done and you can do during your time there.

Travel Requirements For Jamaica

It’s important to make sure you have all the documents needed for your vacation before you go. I always check the GOV.UK site, which is government-owned and provides all the info for every country. I recommend doing the electric C5 Form before arrival; otherwise, you’ll be delayed at the airport.

Language & Currency In Jamaica

Language: Jamaica’s official language is English, but its unique and vibrant Jamaican Patois (or patwa) dialect truly sets the island apart. This colourful Creole language blends elements of English with African, Spanish, and Indigenous influences. As you explore Jamaica, locals will greet you with a cheerful ‘Wah gwaan?’ (What’s going on?).

Currency: The official currency is the Jamaican Dollar, often abbreviated as JMD. While the Jamaican Dollar is the standard, U.S. Dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, making it convenient for visitors. However, having local currency on hand for smaller purchases and experiencing the island like a local is always a good idea. We used the US dollar during our time but often got a change back in JMD. Just be aware of the conversions so you get the correct change.

Few Things I Wish I Knew Before

  • Transport: If you’re planning to move around the island, like hotel hopping, I recommend you hire a car or have a good taxi link while you’re out there. Otherwise, taxis seem to overcharge. Alternatively, I found Booking.com to be the cheapest when moving about. For example, I asked a few taxi drivers what the cost would be to go to Negril from Montego Bay Airport; many charged £90-£115. On booking it was £63.
  • Jamaican Timing: Expect delays and long waits, a typical waiting game commonly known as ‘Jamaican timing’. Sometimes, they are a little late or slower than a Westerner would expect, so stay patient and give yourself more time for anything important.
  • Extra Taxes: Most bills and hotel services include a 10% service charge. So just know the price you think you will pay will be more. Also, some resorts/hotels charge you a total fee of 10% GCT (General Consumption Tax). Packaged holidays, like all-inclusive holidays, may be exempt. I recommend checking before your stay or asking when you will arrive at your accommodation. A hotel in Negril charged us $300 for our food and drinks instead of $250, which is 20% of the service charge and GCT – and we were only there for two nights – if you’re staying a while, it could add up quite a bit!
  • Accomodation: If you are on a tighter budget, staying in an all-inclusive resort or one hotel during your stay will work out cheaper than hotel-hopping, especially with taxi fees moving around.
  • Activities: It’s better to plan some of your activities, as some get sold out pretty quickly. I have a collection of tours you can do in Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios.

Where We Stayed

MONTEGO BAY

We stayed at a charming guesthouse/Airbnb-type hotel in Montego Bay hosted by Claudia, a delightful 82-year-old with a beautiful home. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a peaceful retreat away from the tourist spots with a super-friendly host. You can enjoy a leisurely swim at sunrise and enjoy stunning views, especially at sunset. Claudia’s spacious home features three rooms on her property, with my favourite being her tiny home, which offers extra privacy and is beautifully designed.

Our host in Jamaica! Sweet 82-yer old. Everything travel.

Our lovely host, Claudia <3

There’s a village, just a 5-minute drive away, where you can purchase food and access a supermarket. It’s also not too far from the attraction Rose Hall and is in a secure gated community with night-time security.

Claudia is the sweetest lady! We spent much time getting to know her and enjoyed an evening meal at Pier 1. Her hospitality will make you feel right at home. If you’d like to stay at Claudia’s home, please message me on my Contact Form, and I will send her details. She’ll be happy to have you, especially knowing you’re a friend of mine!

NEGRIL

We also stayed in Negril at a fabulous 5* resort called Ocean Cliff Hotel. This was such a gorgeous spot to stay in! With less than 20 rooms available, this intimate hotel provides the perfect atmosphere for those looking to relax. It’s also only a short bike ride from popular beaches and attractions, which you can rent from the 24-hour reception.

You’ll be greeted by super-friendly staff and a restaurant on-site with delicious food. The food alone is worth the stay—especially the chocolate cake—I’m not kidding! The breakfast was my favourite dish; it’s right up there with one of the best breakfasts I’ve had, ever!

Now, I’ve always said if I had to choose from one cuisine to eat for the rest of my life, the Caribbean cuisine would be it! It is so rich in flavour and delicious; this is the definition of soul home food. Think of all the delicious ackee and saltfish dishes, from plantains to fried dumplings, rice and peas, curry goat, and jerk chicken. This is the heaven of food.
