I’m Not Sure You’re Even Ready For This!

Welcome to Montenegro, the destination you didn’t know you needed! I recently visited here for five days as a solo trip for my 30th birthday, and I can now confirm that it has made it into my top three destinations of all time! This destination is out of this world, from views on views in Budva to character and vibes up a cable car or coaster ride in Kotor; when I say it is stunning, I mean absolutely incredible.

Montenegro is located in Europe, near Croatia, Albania, and Serbia. In low season, return flights from London are typically under £70 and take just 3 hours by plane. Considering its compact size, driving around Montenegro would take about 10 to 12 hours without making long stops.

The views in Montenegro are unreal!

It’s a little country but big on beauty and adventures! Known for its jaw-dropping landscapes, medieval towns, winding cobblestone streets, and lively nightlife, Montenegro sure does pack a punch. Whether you are there for the never-ending mountains, hikes in the national parks, or sightseeing the brilliant masterpieces, Montenegro has a space for everyone.

In this blog, I’ll tell you all you need to know about Montenegro. This includes what not to miss, areas to stay, tips for your time there, and cool things you can experience, especially as a solo traveller.

Language & Currency In Montenegro

Language: Montenegro’s official language is Montenegrin, a South Slavic language closely related to Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian. You’ll often hear these languages spoken interchangeably with Albanian, especially in regions with diverse ethnic communities.

Currency: Montenegro uses the Euro (€) as its official currency, even though it is not a member of the European Union. This makes it convenient for travellers from the Eurozone, as there’s no need for currency exchange.

Transport In Montenegro

Getting around Montenegro is most accessible by car hire. There are many cool spots to visit, so this is the most cost-effective way of exploring everywhere. Remember that they drive on the right side of the road, like in Europe or the US.

Alternatively, bus routes take you to numerous cities, which is also another cost-effective way of getting around. However, it can be more time-consuming, with bus waiting hours and sometimes cancellations. But it is a great way to get to where you want to go, including to nearby countries such as Albania and Croatia.

Coaches are pretty cool; watch out for epic views!

When I was there, I pre-booked a ride from Podgorica Airport to Podgorica Bus Station (a 12-minute drive) for £18. I waited 2 hours from the Bus Station for a 2.5-hour coach ride to Tivat Bus Station, which cost only 8 Euros. The coach also stops in areas such as Budva and Herceg Novi.

If you are arriving at Podgorica Airport, I recommend taxi-sharing or pre-booking. Taxi drivers tend to overcharge massively because there is no Uber, Bolt, or the equivalent. Expect to be charged 25-35 euros for just a 10-minute drive. Obviously, as a solo traveller, this adds up quickly. However, if you arrive at Tivat Airport, you can walk to Tivat Bus Station, about a 15-minute walk.

If you’re spontaneous and want to continue your adventure to nearby countries, ferry lines from Bar and Budva take you to Bari in Italy and Dubrovnik in Croatia.

Top Tips For Montenegro

  • Visit Montegro outside the school holidays, as prices are super cheap during the off-season. For example, a 4-star hotel could cost £80 in the high season but only £25 in the low season!
  • Some places only accept cash. Withdraw Euros preferably beforehand, as fees are pretty expensive from cash point machines. For example, I withdrew 50 Euros (£43) and paid £52 with all the fees! It helps to use banks like Monzo, where you don’t have exchange fees for the first withdrawal of £400 – I forgot to bring mine, so I suffered the extra charges.
  • Leave with extra time in mind. Expect to be stuck in traffic in popular places like Kotor and Budva. It’s expected to be sitting in traffic for hours, so keep that in mind if you need to be somewhere on time.
  • If you travel in high season, you’ll need to book some tours a few days before, as they get booked quickly.
  • You’ll find many businesses closed on Sundays, so avoid doing the main things on Sundays.
  • For those staying more on the outskirts of popular tourist areas, you can download the app Glovo. You can use the code VTAVAPH to get a free delivery on your first three orders. Avoid ordering on Sunday, like I did, as you’ll likely be waiting hours for a driver to pick up your order. The closer you are to Tivat, Budva, and Kotor, the easier the delivery.
  • If you want to capture tourist-free pictures, especially in popular places like Kotor and Budva, I recommend starting your day between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m.

Attractions To Add To Your Montenegro Itinerary

There are attractions all over Montenegro, but there are some popular ones. Some of these attractions can be visited in one day on a tour from Kotor or Budva, which is especially perfect for solo travellers. I’ll recommend them throughout this blog.

Kotor Cable Car

Hop on the Kotor Cable Car and get ready for a sky-high adventure! This thrilling ride zips you from the coast to the top of Mount Lovćen, where jaw-dropping views of the Bay of Kotor and its ancient walled town await. As you glide up the cable car, watch the bay, mountains, and medieval rooftops unravel beneath you—it’s like seeing Montenegro from a whole new angle! A round-trip cable car costs around 23 Euros and takes around 12-15 minutes to reach the top.

Bobsleigh Alpine Coaster Ride

This one deserves a separate shout-out! Once you are at the top of the Cable Cars, you can opt to go on the Bobsleigh Alpine Coaster Ride for 8 Euros. It’s such a fun experience, and you can control your coaster ride speed, so anyone height-nervous like myself would love it. You’ll have top-tier views over Montenegro whilst indulging in a thrill. The coaster ride lasts about 5 minutes and is well worth it!

It is also the perfect location if you’re looking for some nightlife action, with live bands and good vibes. Most parties go on until about 1 a.m. in the centre of the town. Sometimes, it can be awkward as a solo traveller to attend nightlife bits, but this actually was really comfortable as I just enjoyed the vibe of the live band and then was joined by a few girls from my hostel.

Tara Bridge

Get your adrenaline pumping at Tara Bridge, Durmitor National Park (a UNESCO Heritage site). This epic bridge spans the stunning Tara Canyon, offering jaw-dropping views and heart-racing excitement. Whether crossing it for the view or taking a leap off it with a bungee jump or zip-line experience, Tara Bridge is the ultimate spot for adventure seekers and thrill lovers.

Tara Bridge was built between 1940 and 1942 to improve regional transportation and connectivity. It links the towns of Zabljak and Mojkovac across the stunning Tara River Canyon. During World War II, the construction of the Tara Bridge was a strategic project, as it played a crucial role in connecting different regions of Montenegro. It was also partially destroyed to stop the enemies from crossing, which was later reconstructed.
