How Many Countries Are In Europe?

Whether you’re already planning your next European trip or just dreaming about it (you know, eat, sleep, dream, repeat), you might be wondering how many countries there are in Europe. Let’s start with that:

0
The number of countries in Europe

There are 44 European countries, 27 of which are in the EU. That’s 44 destinations to add to your travel list. From the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the picturesque scenery in Greece, Europe offers the ultimate place to say YES to.

Which European Countries Have You Done?

I haven’t been to every country yet, but it’s on my list, of course. I don’t have favourites, but my current Top 3 in Europe are Montenegro, Greece, and Monaco.

Remember, the UK is also included in the list for Europe. It may be home, but you could also consider exploring the UK for a staycation. Staycations have been a popular and on-the-rise trend since COVID-19, so if you can’t make a European trip, consider a holiday from home instead.

When’s The Best Time To Visit Europe?

Europe’s peak season is, of course, summer; it resembles a party, and you’re invited! From June to August, keen explorers from all corners of the globe flock to soak up the sights and bask in the sunshine we’ve been waiting for… which is most of the year in the UK.

But wait. Just because it’s peak season doesn’t mean you should go. I’d recommend holding onto your money during this time. Why? Well, flights are more expensive than getting your hair done. Plus, the cute hotels tend to be through the roof in high season, and everything just seems sooo much more expensive and busier, too.

If you’re set on braving the crowds during Europe’s peak times, do yourself a favour and book everything in advance. Trust me, those flights and hotel prices can go from 0 to 100 real quick!

I’d recommend Europe during the off-season instead, roughly from the end of September to late April. My favourite time to travel is October and April/early May, as both months tend to remain warm. Also, flights and hotels in the off-season are absolute bargains; they practically roll out the red carpet with slashed prices. I booked a return flight to Latvia one time for just £12!

Now, I know what you’re thinking—winter in Europe when you could opt for the Caribbeans? But hear me out. Some spots turn into winter wonderlands, perfect for ski girlies or anyone itching for a cosy European Christmas market. Ultimately, there’s no better time to visit – so just go!

What To Expect In Europe

Northern Europe: Brace yourself for a winter wonderland! Northern Europe is all about breathtaking fjords, snow-dusted landscapes, and mesmerizing Northern Lights. Visit in winter for the best chance to catch the aurora in action! From the cobbly streets in Latvia to the spectacular Vigeland Park in Norway, these places are playgrounds for those who love seeing cool things.

Eastern Europe: Imagine stepping back into the Cold War era. That’s Eastern Europe for you, with its rich history and vibrant culture. From Dubrovnik’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Croatia, to the iconic Rila Monastery, another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Bulgaria, the Eastern region is perfect for exploring and a paradise haven for budget travellers!

Southern Europe: Picture yourself basking in the Mediterranean sun, cycling through streets surrounded by ancient ruins, and sipping on oh-my-fine wine. That, my friend, is the magic of Southern Europe. From the stunning coastlines of Greece and Italy to the chilled atmosphere in Malta, this region is popular with those who like the finer aesthetics in life.

Western Europe: Welcome to the poster child of European travel! It boasts iconic destinations like France, Amsterdam, and Monaco, drawing millions of visitors annually. Best Countries For A European Trip As A Solo Traveller

Once upon a time, as a solo traveller, I found it hard to choose where to go and what to do. But now, as a seasoned veteran constantly running away from the UK, sometimes alone or with as a mum and daughter trip, I’ve realised that many plans are better curated spontaneously while away.

Now, I’m not saying I don’t plan anything; I am just spontaneous. If you’re looking to go away as a solo traveller but unsure where you want to go, I recommend these few places in Europe.

Montenegro: After recently visiting on a solo trip for my 30th birthday, Montenegro is my new favourite European destination. It is just WOW. I’d highly recommend this destination if you’re considering where to go. It feels super safe, it’s easy to make friends, it’s surrounded by absolute beauty, and it offers adrenaline-type adventures. Win, win, win, winner!

Latvia: For solo travellers seeking a weekend trip away, consider visiting Latvia. Spending three days here will allow you to see the best of this country, particularly Riga, Latvia’s capital. Return flights and accomodation are usually cheap, making Latvia the perfect short-trip getaway for one.

Portugal: Picture yourself wandering through Porto’s vibrant street art streets, enjoying a delicious pastel de nata (custard tart with flaky pastry shells and caramelized tops) whilst basking in the sun’s golden glow. A week in Portugal as a solo traveller is the perfect chilled-out beach getaway.

Italy: Oh, where do you start with Italy? Whether you plan on just spending a few days here – like 36 hours in Rome – or exploring Italy from head to toe, Italy is a travel haven. Filled with iconic attractions like the Colosseum in Rome and the popular Lake Como, choosing Italy as a solo traveller adventure is just a no-brainer!
