Welcome to Vanuatu, an archipelago of 83 islands in the South Pacific Ocean, known for its pristine natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs. Offering an authentic off-the-beaten-track experience, Vanuatu is an ideal destination for travellers seeking adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion.
Although my family was worried, as the cannibalism culture had still been adopted until 1969, I decided I wanted something different. So, while living in New Zealand on a working holiday visa, I visited this off-the-beaten island on a solo trip, among other underrated islands like Rarotonga.
The rich cultural heritage steeped in traditional Melanesian customs, ceremonies, and indigenous languages added charm to its appeal. So, whether you plan to explore its hidden gems, unwind on secluded beaches, or delve into local customs, Vanuatu promises an unforgettable journey!

Vanuatu Language, Currency, & Safety
Language: Bislama, English, and French are the official languages in Vanuatu. Bislama, a Creole language, takes centre stage, serving as the preferred language spoken by a diverse population. English and French typically appear in government, education, and tourist areas, making it ideal for travellers to communicate.
Currency: Introduced in 1982 to replace the New Hebrides Franc, the Vanuatu Vatu, abbreviated as VUV, is now used for the island’s transactions. Remember to keep some cash handy, as not all spots are card-friendly!
Solo Travel Safety: Vanuatu was the first proper solo destination I went to when I first began my solo traveller journey, and what a destination to pick. Despite the cannibalism history, I actually felt quite safe. It did pass my mind, but that thought quickly disappeared upon arrival; the locals were so sweet!
I hired a private driver to take me to the main attractions, and I felt safe walking alone to the shops and town. But, just like anywhere you go, especially if you’re a solo traveller, stay vigilant and use your solo safety skills.

Espiritu Santo. If you prefer to be near popular attractions such as Millennium Cave, Champagne Beach or historic WWII attractions, consider staying in Espiritu Santo for convenience. You’ll find a range of accommodations, like an island resort, at this location.

Things To Do In Luganville
I’m only aware of one full-day tour you can do while on Espiritu Santo Island. It covers this island’s main attractions: the Santo Blue Hole, Champagne Beach, Milion Dollar Point, and Orly Port.
Blue Holes in Espiritu Santo Island
The blue hole you’ll visit is Nanda Blue Hole or Jacquie’s Blue Hole, named after the friendly owner and his family. It is known as one of the most spectacular Blue Holes in Vanuatu and a worthy place to visit.
At Champagne Beach, you’ll arrive in awe as you witness a stunning, almost pure white sandy beach surrounded by the jungle at one of the world’s greatest tropical beaches. You’ll then head off to the Million Dollar Point attraction and learn the history of this location and how it came to be. Lastly, you’ll visit Port Orly Beach, surrounded by verdant green hills, crystal clear waters and sandy white beach.
You can also snorkel, swim and hike at the protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you’ll have a chance to swim with sea lions, snorkel on coral reefs, explore deserted beaches, and enjoy the volcanic landscape of this well-protected reserve.
Tanna: Where Beauty Meets Drama
Discover Tanna, a captivating and culturally rich island known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes and traditional custom villages. Visiting Tanna offers visitors a unique and unforgettable experience. It is mostly known for its star attraction, Mount Yasur, one of the world’s most accessible and active volcanoes. Awe-inspiring volcanic displays and mesmerizing night-time eruptions can be witnessed here.
Alongside Mount Yasur’s natural beauties, Tanna boasts beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, diving and snorkelling experiences, and underwater caves, making it a must-visit destination for travellers seeking an adventurous journey in Vanuatu.

Locations To Stay In Tanna
Mount Yasur. If you are mainly here to witness the eruption of Mount Yasur, consider staying close by. Several accomodation options, like lodges and bungalows, offer convenient access to Mount Yasur for sunset and night-time visits.
Lenekal. You can find a mix of guesthouses and budget-friendly accommodations if you stay in Lenekal. You’ll have excellent access to local markets and restaurants, local markets, and a glimpse of villages and everyday life on the island.
Port Resolution & White Grass. Port Resolution is a picturesque location with stunning scenery and traditional villages. Guesthouses and bungalows are available, and they are excellent bases for exploring nearby villages and other cultural attractions.

Pentecost Island: Vanuatu’s Fascinating Island
Pentecost Island is known for an interesting and traditional ritual called ‘land diving’ or ‘Nagot’. During the annual land diving ceremony, local men daringly jump from tall wooden towers with vines tied to their ankles, representing a rite of passage and a celebration of the yam harvest during April, May and June. Land diving is an extraordinary event.
In addition to the land diving, Pentecost offers stunning surroundings, lush forests, pristine waters, and unique cultural experiences with friendly locals. It’s one of those islands you’ll NEVER forget.

There are limited places to stay in Pentecost, especially during the land diving season, so I advise you to book accommodation beforehand to avoid disappointment.

Land diving is the most popular attraction on Pentecost Island. Visitors come just for this extraordinary event, which is hosted every year.
Besides land diving, you can check out the custom villages, hike and trek through rainforests to explore hidden waterfalls and visit stunning viewpoints.
